Monhegan memories

This summer, I had the awesome experience of visiting and painting Monhegan Island for the first time.  Staying on the island over four days, I can say that it is one of the most magical and relaxing places I have ever visited and plan on returning next year for a longer stay  - potentially teaching a plein air workshop on the island.

This painting of Monhegan fishing shacks is a 6"x8" oil on panel and is currently available through The Red Piano Gallery in Bluffton, SC.

Summer and Fall Workshops 2018

The comment I hear most from my students is "I want to paint looser and not be so fussy!"

In my workshops, we will discuss the techniques for making your paintings more expressive, fresher and painterly.  Whether you’re a beginner picking up a brush for the first time, a painter seeking to take their work to the next level, or someone returning to art after a long time away from the easel, these workshops are designed to be both informative, inspirational and fun.

Beginning with a discussion on the “basics” of oil painting (from materials to paint handling), these workshops will also address the fundamentals of color, value, edges and perspective. Instruction will include a short painting demo each day with an explanation of my process along the way. Students will then paint quick studies that incorporate the techniques discussed, with plenty of one-on-one individual instruction throughout each day.

Plein Air Workshop at Olana - Hudson, NY

Plein Air Workshop at Olana
Three-Day Painting Workshop with Dan Graziano
August 24-26, 2018    Hudson, New York

Olana was the home, studio and artist-designed landscape of the nineteenth-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, the premier artist of the Hudson River Valley art movement.  Church spent forty years designing and perfecting his vision for the 250 acre Olana estate, embracing architecture, art and landscape into one integrated environment.  His design combined natural landforms with the careful layout of carriage drives, ponds and extensive plantings of trees and shrubs to conceal, reveal and frame vistas of the property and the wider Hudson Valley.

This unique workshop provides participants the opportunity to paint within the singular beauty of the Olana estate.  The first day begins with a discussion of the “basics” of painting (from materials to paint handling) as well as the fundamentals of composition, color, value, edges and perspective. Instruction will focus on painting en plein air, including how to develop greater skills of observation, simplification, and quickly painting “wet on wet” (alla prima) to translate what you see and experience into strong paintings. Participants will paint outdoors at different locations each day and include a short painting demo by Dan.

Workshop fee is $350.  Students supply their own art supplies and equipment - lunch is not provided.  To register for this workshop,  CLICK HERE.
