an afternoon in Stonington, Maine

afternoon in Stonington   11" x 14" oil on panel
Yesterday, I spent a very enjoyable afternoon painting in Stonington.  It was a mild, crystal clear day - perfect for painting outdoors and capturing the wonderful colors of the place.  Stonington is a small seaport village located at the southern tip of Deer Isle and possessing those unique characteristics of time, use, decay and adaptation that create authentic places .  I discovered this spot up the hill from town on Church Street which had the most interesting composition combining an old yellow clapboard house, a large rock outcropping and a hint of the harbor below.  The grass in the foreground was an amazing luminescent green.  Although quite windy at times, it was a perfect day and the light was exceptional.

Stonington is a place that I found so rich in visual character, I can see why it is one of the favorite places for many artists to paint.
