Fresh paint... "street food" 12x16 oil on panel. I painted this from a recent photo I took walking on Commercial Street in Portland, Maine. I work both from my own photos and from life. Photos usually cannot compete with the color and values one experiences by painting from life (at least my camera can't), but I often run across special moments that happen in split seconds that I capture with my camera for later use. I only use these camera images for size and perspective references, with the rest coming from my personal memory and the experience of being there. In crafting a focus and narrative idea about the scene, I often change a few things, push some values or colors, and delete objects which may be distracting or unnecessary to the painting.
